Hey! My newsletter platform has changed the way everything works. I was just getting comfy with the old format, but I kind of like this new way of composing the information.

There are some great Fall themed paintings on the schedule for October. Make sure to check out the calendar on my website. One of the newest features on the site is “Kathy’s Kalendar“. You are actually able to sign up for the classes at Legacy or Prima through my site. When you hover over the date of the class there is a direct link to Resy reservations for each restaurant. I’ll be at Baron’s Creek Vineyards beginning Oct. 14. They will be hosting classes once a month, the second Wednesday of each month. I’m excited to help establish a new venue in Spanish Springs.

Many of you already know about Primary Colors. You cannot mix any other colors together to make a primary. All others are made by mixing various combinations beginning with the primaries. I want to talk briefly about each of them in the next few newsletters. Let’s start with RED.

What comes to mind when you think about this color? Passion, Love, Anger, Blood? The Egyptians and the Mayans were some of the first civilizations to use red dyes that were associated with power and status. The Chinese used red to represent good luck and happiness. The Romans used red in association with war and courage. Red has the longest wavelength compared to other colors. These waves vibrate slower than other colors. Because of this our eyes see red as a warm color. Red is the first color in the rainbow. Our human eyes are most sensitive to this color. This is important to know for art purposes. We can use red in our paintings if we want to draw attention to a certain subject or area. There’s a lot more to know about RED but I’ve promised to keep my newletter short.

Remember, we will be having a little Bob Ross recognition during our class at Legacy on Oct. 29 in honor of his birthday. You might want to brush up on a little B.R. trivia.

I start teaching again this week at Legacy and Prima and I have a few private events for the month of August. So much has happened over the last few weeks. It seems like such a long time since I’ve seen your happy faces! I have so many stories to tell. And I can’t wait to hear what you all have been up to since I’ve been away.

I’ve always felt like a Villager since I’ve been coming here for 18 years. But now it’s official. I closed on the sale of my house in Ocala and on the purchase of my new home in The Villages on June 9. It was challenging in so many ways. There were moments when it truly felt nightmarish, but worth it in the end (kind of like childbirth ). I’m really happy with my new home and I’m still in the process of unpacking, etc. It’s going to take a while because, as some of you know, I sold a 2900sf house that was full of furniture that I did not sell, and bought a fully furnished 1900sf home. Yes, I currently have 4 sofas and a POD full of furniture that hasn’t even been delivered yet. I’m looking forward to setting up my art studio asap.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to paint since I’ve been away because I had a total knee replacement on July 1. It was supposed to be June 17, but it got postponed two weeks due to a problem at the surgery center in Gainesville. I was allowing 6-7 weeks for recovery before teaching again, even thought the doctor said I would be ready after 2-3 weeks. Not true. I’m glad that I allowed more time. I used the two weeks prior to surgery to get somewhat settled in the new house. I feel that it was important to locate things like forks, toilet paper, and TV remote controls (still looking for a couple). But it’s ok because I also now have 5 TVs.

This space changes every day. There’s a sofa and a loveseat somewhere in there!

Future Studio Space!!!

Well, I just wanted to update everybody. I am SOOOOO excited to see everyone. Since I’m moving about a little easier, my goal is to get a few brand new paintings out soon. Get ready for the change of season. In our hearts it will soon be Fall, but outdoors it’s still summer. Our friends from up north will be returning soon. Remember, if you’ve thought about a private party or event now is the time to schedule it. I have parties in September already. AND I’ve added a new venue! Starting October 14 I will be teaching once a month at Barons Creek Vineyards Tasting Room in Spanish Springs.

Thanks for hanging in there with me while I try to develop the habit of writing fun and informative, artsy news for you!

I want to start by sharing some words of wisdom (not mine, but I am borrowing them and paraphrasing). As you know, whenever I teach a class I’m constantly reminding you that you can do your own thing with my paintings. I want you to be you. My original “paint and sip” creations are for you to use until you find your own painting voice. I tell you all the time that what I say is a suggestion – I don’t want your painting to look like mine. I want you to make it yours! There is no right way to create art. Art is subjective. We’ve all heard that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Many people that attend class show up to create a painting for someone else (grandchildren, for example). They are painting to connect with someone. The beauty of creating art is that you never know who will connect with your art. Not everyone will like it. You may not even like it. It doesn’t matter. It is the ACT of creating that matters.

It’s so funny that whenever I have my back turned to a class, people think I can’t hear what they are saying. Lol! One of the things that I hear quite often is that you’re afraid. My response is always “Don’t be afraid! It’s only paint!” Fear of failure is one of the most common fears known to humanity. But there is NO failure when it comes to art. It is not always about the outcome. But it is always about the process of creating.

I’d like to share something that happened a few weeks ago. One day after class someone said “You’ve motivated me. I have to show you something.” She picked up her tote bag and pulled out two small paintings. She said that she was inspired to paint at home. So she got some supplies together and painted at home for the very first time! Now she LOVES it and wants to paint more! That made me so happy!!! It is never too early or too late to begin exploring your artsy side. I’m always disappointed whenever I hear people say they have no artistic ability or that they cannot draw a straight line. That’s what rulers are for, people! And lines don’t have to be straight.

I guess what I’m trying to get across is stop trying to be perfect. It is a waste of energy trying to achieve it. It’s ok to color outside the lines. It’s ok to mess up. It’s ok to cause “happy accidents” (thank you, Bob Ross!). Sometimes in the middle of chaos and messiness beauty can be found.

Hello Beautiful Humans!

I’m thrilled to be writing my first blog/newletter post!  Welcome to the birth of this little art universe!

I’ll keep this first one short and sweet.  But if you know me, I’m sure that the forthcoming posts will turn into “Spicy Nice”!

The first thing I’d like to say is THANK YOU ALL  for being patient while waiting for this newsletter to materialize.  It’s going to evolve as time goes on.  I hope to fill it with fun ideas and glittery, paint-splattered moments.

Think of this space as a studio full of messy paint palettes and sketchbooks full of creativity.
